SHAC is sustainable housing project competition. Nine teams around New Zealand competed to design and building the most sustainable housing. Their houses were judged by a builder, architect, BEACON manager and two researchers.
One of the teams built an adobe (or close to it) house for a Maori (native New Zealander) family. The team also constructed the house using 20% local volunteers. This savings then became the down payment on the house.
Another team focused on recycled materials. The wood was recycled from old hospital beds and used hay as wall insulation.
Probably one of the most interesting projects was to create a room that would be attached on to the side of a high rise apartment building. This room would capture rainwater from the roof, generate hot water through solar panels and manage compost through worm farms.
This competition goes to show that the folks of New Zealand have the desire to improve the overall living of the residents while also helping the environment.
